According to this site, that is a Cypripedium reginae, the Showy Lady Slipper.

I didn't know this but Lady Slippers are a native North American orchid, and all wild ones you see are considered endangered species.

Needless to say, I knew that it was federally protected and have not pointed out the location of this particular cluster of Lady Slippers to anyone but Jean (who now knows the approximate location). If the local children discovered them, they would cease to exist, I am sure.

Endangered species? As in "federally protected"? And the first clear-cutting has already begun to make way for the seven condo units/houses to be built along "Lady Slipper Lane" back in the area where Lady Slippers grow--or used to, years ago!

Methinks perhaps 'tis time to do a bit more Lady Slipper hunting...

Perhaps there is a local flower or conservation society which could see about transplanting those orchids to a protected area?
